Brief description of the course
The lecture course introduces different ways of philosophical thinking, basic concepts, schools, and basic disciplines of philosophy as they have developed in the history of Western philosophy, and some samples of philosophical writing. Among the subjects of discussion are human being and its existential situation, the power of language, the world, the Other, and the limits of our understanding.
The obligatory reading list consists of selections from the writings of Camus, Pascal, Seneca, Nietzsche, Plato, Bibikhin, Heraclitus, and Sartre.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has broad understanding of key philosophical concepts and doctrines in metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory;
- has ability to make out a reasoned case in support of one’s views;
- has ability to present fairly, yet critically, the views and arguments of philosophers;
- has ability to write clearly and in an organized fashion.
