Course aims

The purpose of the course is:
to support the development of skilled use of pedagogical terminology;
to support the formation of knowledge regarding the nature and development of cognitive processes and their role in learning;
to support the formation of knowledge for planning, analysing and designing learning environments and activities as a teacher;
to create prerequisites for the formation of up-to-date knowledge and skills required of teachers regarding educational technology.

Brief description of the course

Questions about the nature and definitions of pedagogy. Pedagogical reality, pedagogical relations, pedagogical awareness. The teacher as a pedagogue. Pedagogy and education. Education and learning. An overview of the nature and development of cognitive processes (incl. executive functions, thoughts and emotions) and their role in learning.
An overview of general competences and possibilities for supporting their development, relying on knowledge regarding the nature and development of cognitive processes.
Self Determination Theory and possibilities for its application via support for the basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and affiliation) of learners. The teacher's instruction style and the involvement of learners. Autonomy and structure as important components of a learning environment that supports learning. The self-regulated learner. Planning a lesson: from the formulation of lesson outcomes to assessment. Feedback and formative assessment. Ability beliefs and the teacher's role in giving feedback that supports a growth mindset. Study tasks and methods. Principles and possibilities of integrated curriculum. The role and possibilities of information and communications technology (ICT) in diversifying the learning process, assessment and feedback.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- uses appropriate pedagogical terminology;
-notices and analyses the role of mental processes in learning (incl. in the development of general competencies);
- sees possibilities of designing learning environments that support autonomy and cooperative processes in subject-matter teaching;
- is able to create conditions for supporting the development of self-reflective and self-regulated learners;
- relying on theory, analyses the learning process, including the purposefulness and justification of the choice of learning tasks and methods (incl. ICT aids);
- sets goals, plans and gives feedback on the learning process according to the learner's developmental needs and goals of the learning activity (using ICT aids among others);
-plans a lesson plan in support of interdisciplinary integration, including the use of ICT tools.
