Course aims
The purpose of the course is:
- to shape an appreciative attitude towards work with learners with special needs in the context of inclusive education;
- to create opportunities for acquiring knowledge about learners with special needs and ways of supporting them;
- to develop a readiness for reflective practice in professional work that is based on ethical beliefs, and choosing and reflecting upon relevant information;
- to support the development of positive attitudes, acquisition of basic knowledge and readiness for carrying out research in teacher's everyday work environment.
Brief description of the course
Planning instruction with students’ diversity in mind. Becoming aware and recognizing students’ special needs. Principles and possibilities of learning differentiation. Inclusive education and its application in schools. Legal acts related to school organisation and designing educational outcomes (including cooperation with colleagues, and CLIL). Learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia).Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder. Behavioural difficulties. Giftedness. Autism spectrum disorder. Cultural and gender issues. Teacher as a researcher of one’s own professional practice. Stages of action research. Developing a research question for action research, phrasing questions, drafting an action plan and choosing data collection methods. Ethical requirements in research.Intervention strategies. Analysis and presentation of action research results.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is aware of the specifics of development due to special needs and the possibilities to apply subject teaching according to the individual needs of the student (incl. linguistic and cultural) and school legislation;
- distinguishes and describes the specifics of development due to special needs and applies the principles of subject teaching in accordance with the legislation of school organization and according to the individual needs of the student (incl. linguistic and cultural);
- knows and plans the principles and possibilities of differentiation / individualization of the learning process;
- links inclusive learning ideas to school realities;
- uses various methods (incl. action research) to analyze and develop their work and learning environment.
