Course aims

The course introduces the main issues and concepts of law and legal science as well as the basic methods of implementing the law.

Brief description of the course

Law as a phenomenon. Definition of law, normative approach to it and the system of law. Development of law. Main legal systems in the world. The system of law. Estonian legal system: the structure and the main fields. Legal facts and legal relations. Sources of law: types and ways of finding official texts. Logical structure of the legal norm. Implementation of the law. Techniques in applying the law. Legal decision and discretion. Subsummation. Rules of logic. Legal interpreting. Filling the gaps in law. Law in society. Legality and efficiency of law. Legal approach to state. Basic concepts in public law. Constitutional, state and administrative law, criminal and procedural law. Basic concepts in private law. Persons, objects, transactions.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of law and legal science;
- has knowledge of the basic terms and concepts and an ability to use them;
- has basic ability to use the basic methods of implementing the law.
