Brief description of the course
A brief history of chemistry. Principles of the classification and the nomenclature of compounds. Structure of atoms, s-, p-, d- and f-elements. Promotion and hybridisation. Types of chemical bond. Complex compounds. Aggregative states. Gas laws. Crystal lattices. The Periodic system. Chemical kinetics. Le Chateliers principle. Thermochemistry. Surface phenomena. Catalysis. Dispersoids, sols. Raoult' law. Osmosis. Electrolytic dissociation and pH. Hydrolysis. Redox reactions. Electrochemistry. Exercises and training: structure of the chemical bonds of atoms and molecules, the periodic system, kinetics. Calculations of molar concentration, masses and yields of reagents. Exercises concerning gas laws, solutions, hydrolysis, redox reactions, electrolysis, etc. Individual work with literature and solving of training exercises.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has general and integrated knowledge about chemical foundations in the context of fundamental regularities;
- has ability to create connections between different areas of chemistry and to apply quantitative methods;
- has skills to solve the lessons as follows: calculations about per cent and molar concentrations, redox equations, calculations according to chemical formulae and equations;
- has knowledge in the field of chemical nomenclature and terminology.
