Course aims
TThe aim of the lecture course is to overview the diversity of water resources, to explain the importance of water resources, and to express the principles and measures of water management and protection. The physical, chemical, biological and microbiological characteristics of natural, drinking and waste waters are explaned. The characteristics of water quality (for human consumtion, waterbodies classification), the water quality effect to ecosystems and human health, and the principles of drinking water production, waste water treatment, quality control and monitoring are introduced.
Brief description of the course
Water resources diversity and distribution. Uniqueness and universality of water. Caracterization of water as a substanse. Physiological aspects of water. Hygienical aspects of water. Water quality parameters: physical, chemical, biological and microbiological. Water ecology and toxicology. Water resources and quality in Estonia. The water policy of European Union. The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and catchments based water management. Characterization of water bodies from the aspects of environment for natural life and for human use and consumption. Drinking water production, problems and quality regulation. Waste water classification, facilities (sewers, treatment plants) and treatment. Marine and coastal waters management and regulation. Impacts of water pollutants to ecosystems and human health.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has general knowledge about surface and groundwater characteristics, which help them to understand the principles of water management, the process of water quality formation and water ecosystems behavior;
- obtains main principles and methods used for drinking water production, waste water purification and water quality evaluation;
- obtains main principles of sustainable water management and the EU water policy.
