Course aims
The course belongs to introductory courses in BA studies, recommended to senior year students in particular in social sciences. The main aim is to introduce students to the basic concepts and ideas about the population development.
Brief description of the course
Overview of the concepts and schools in population studies. The main focus is on demographic transition, including epidemiologic, fertility and mobility transition, as well as social consequences of the change of reproductive regime. Students are introduced to major international population databases (UN, Eurostat). Lectures are combined with the reading of course literature and calculation exercises. In case the English-speaking group is smaller than 20 students, lectures will be substituted with reading tasks.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows basic concepts and ideas about population development;
- is familiar with main international population databases;
- understands the content of basic summary measures.
