Course aims
To support the development of educational sciences and subject didactics knowledge, skills and beliefs and create connnections between theory and practice.
To support the development of analytical skills related to pedagogical situations and the learning environment and implementing these skills in planning and conducting the learning process.
To support the development of the students´ subject specific and professional knowledge and skills and preparedness to implement these in a school or learning environment.
To support the development of teacher identity.
Brief description of the course
The organisation and content of Basic Teaching Practice II is connected to educational science subjects KAT7033.HR, KAT7034.HR and studies in subject didactics. Practice takes place on six days during the spring semester in Tallinn University partner schools and practice institutions connected to the university. Integrated tasks are given and their analysis will take place in subjects KAT7033.HR, KAT7034.HR and subject didactics. During the Basic Teaching Practice II, the student will practice skills acquired in educational science and subject didactics courses.
Practice tasks will focus on the following topics:
1. Noticing and taking into consideration student individuality, including special needs, in the learning process.
2. Teacher as a leader and councellor.
In course of one practice day, the activities will take place during 4- 8 hours (36 hours in total during the teaching practice). In course of the teaching practice, the student will carry out different observation tasks and small-scale practical tasks. On the basis of lesson observations and carried out tasks, the student will analyse their own actions and their fellow students actions and effect on the learner. Feedback and the analysis of theory and practice is done in the educational science and subject didactics courses following the practice days. Seminars (total 4 hours) are held at the beginning and end of the teaching practice. Practice organisation and tasks are introduced in the framework of subjects KAT7033:HR, KAT7034.HR and subject didactics.
Students will receive practice tasks electronically through eDidaktikum.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- analyses the school learning environment and the student support system, based on documents, observations and interviews with support staff;
- notes and takes into account the learner's individual characteristics (individualisation, differentiation) when planning the learning process and selecting teaching materials, implements what is planned and analyses the effectiveness of the implementation of support activities in the course of classroom activities and in the course of an activity-based study, drawing on theoretical knowledge acquired in educational science and subject didactics;
- plans, in cooperation with the supervising teacher or a fellow student, a lesson or part of a lesson, taking into account the learners' abilities and needs, using digital technology where possible, carries it out independently or in cooperation, and analyses what has been done;
- in collaboration with the supervising teacher, designs and implements an assessment tool/assessment criteria in the learning process, either independently or in collaboration with the teacher, analyses and uses the results to provide feedback to support learning.
