Course aims
Supply learning conditions which:
-would enable the students to develop systematic overview of the main periods of western civilization and main events of each period;
-would enable students to acquire skills for defining the main stages of the development of human society, and the characteristic traits of each period;
-would enable students to develop overview of the connections between the historical and cultural heritage of each period with contemporary times.
Brief description of the course
Overview of European history and its main periods. Each period will be introduced through the main political events and structures, social trends, religious ideas, culture, and main achievements and innovations.
The course is an introduction and the topics covered will be covered in more detail during the more specific courses.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can specify and describes the main stages in the development of the European civlisation;
- can specify the crucial events pertaining to the political, social and cultural development;
- shortly describes the statehood and the socity of every period;
- describes the essential characteristics of and the main trends of development in every period’s ideology and culture;
- understands the basic teminology pertaining to each epoch, and is able to use this for describing the past society.
