Course aims
Discuss why the Russian Empire collapsed and how the Bolsheviks came to power. Characterisation of the Soviet Union and its history until 1991.
Brief description of the course
Alexander III and Nikolai II and their time. War with Japan and the revolution of 1905. State Duma and Duma-monarchy. First World War. Events of 1917 and the Bolsheviks' coup d'etat. Civil War. The NEP-era. Stalin comes to power. Live in the Soviet Union during the 1930s. Second World War. The final years of Stalinism. Khrushchev's „Thaw“ and Brezhnev's period of stagnation. USSR and the Cold War. Resistance to the regime. Gorbatchev's perestroika and „new thinking“ in foreign policy. National question during perstroika and the liberation movement of Soviet peoples. The breaking up of the empire. The Russian Federation in the era of Yelzin and Putin.
