Brief description of the course
Main issues targeted are:
why different art histories are written and is one better and more correct than another;
Art history as process without accidentals, everything that comes is related to what was before.
Such approach helps to orientate in the multitude of various trends and shows that there is no mentionable gap between past and modern art.
The development of visual culture from the first images up to modern times will be looked at in the socio-political context, but also as documents of the relationships between those who ordered the pieces and artists. Further aspects dealt will be the reactions of the contemporary viewers, and how the spectators' attitudes have changed through history.
The contact meetings are amply illustrated by visual materials and BBC and British Museum documentaries will be used to introduce recent developments in the field.
