Course aims
Introduction to the contents and significance of Christian artifacts.
Brief description of the course
The course aims to give an overview of the principles of visualizing Christian topics in art, focusing on artefacts from the Middle Ages. Traditional ways of depicting the main concepts, characters and events of the Christian faith, as well as the role of sacred images in theology, ritual and devotion are addressed. In seminars, we practice recognizing and explaining iconographic types, and get to know the literature and internet sources for interpreting Christian artifacts.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student is familiar with the methods and terminology of iconography;
able to find and use literature and internet sources on symbols;
able to describe and explain the depictions on Christian artifacts;
able to interpret the Christian artifacts in their historical context.
