Brief description of the course
Classical cartography. Structure of cartography and relationship with other sciences. Map elements, conventional signs. Base and thematic maps. Map projections and geographical grid system (latitude, longitude). Using of maps. GIS and its development. Elements of GIS – data input, software, hardware, and users. Practical works with GIS software (MapInfo and web-based map servers).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to analyse and read maps and GIS databases;
- can characterise the differences between classical paper copy map and GIS;
- is able to make or design simple databases for GIS.
