Course aims
To support the understanding of the importance of creating an emotionally and socially safe learning environment and to develop skills for creating a safe learning environment.
To support the development of teachers' self-effective attitude by supporting learners with special needs in the learning environment.
To create preconditions for the development of a systematic and complex understanding of the counseling process in the context of teamwork.
Provide opportunities to learn about the different methods and techniques used in the counseling process.
To support the development of readiness to work with different target groups
Brief description of the course
Safe classroom environment, relationships in the classroom. Causes and manifestations of emotional and behavioral difficulties in a pedagogical context. Social skills and the development of social competence. Reducing unwanted behavior by enforcing desired patterns of behavior. Behavior support plan, the role of feedback in consolidating positive behavior. Factors influencing the teacher's coping. Various behavioral development programs. Cooperation and counseling in case of behavioral problems. An overview of the general principles of counseling, the stages of the counseling process, the basic counseling skills, the personal characteristics of the counselor.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can create mentally and emotionally safe cooperation that supports development and creativity and a mutually respectful learning environment, based on the needs of different learners;
- is ready to prevent behavioral problems by observing the study group; In order to prevent conflict situations, a learner with special needs develops the ability to understand different situations, assess their own and others' emotions, behavior and its compliance with the norms;
- justifies the importance of supporting pre-regulatory skills and creating a safe learning environment for the well-being and academic achievement of all learners;
- has implemented interventions to support one student and analyzed their activities on the basis of evidence;
- is able to determine the need for counseling, deals with counseling systematically and comprehensively;
- can advise and instruct persons involved in study activities in supporting the learner in the learning process;
- follows and values the ethical principles related to the counseling process.

This course is a part of acquiring the teacher, level 7 elective competence Supporting a student with special educational needs during the studies of a primary school teacher, subject teacher, and class teacher.
