Course aims
Raise awareness when noticing learning difficulties, support competence in assessing students' learning competences and subject skills, and supporting students in teaching.
Brief description of the course
Expression and causes of learning difficulties. Peculiarities of the development of learning competence in students with the peculiarities of cognitive processes. Difficulty reading, understanding and composing text, writing and calculating. Manifestation of learning difficulties in different subjects at different school levels. Assessing (part of) writing, reading and numeracy skills and supporting learner development. Developing metacognitive awareness and metacognitive skills in enhancing learning. Individualization of learning, selection, preparation and adaptation of study material, adaptation of learning environment. Individual curriculum.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- orients himself / herself in the requirements of the national curricula in the Estonian language and mathematics curricula and is able to assess the conformity of the child 's knowledge and skills to them;
- is able to assess and find out the level of the learner's study skills and subject-related (reading skills, text comprehension and creation, writing and mathematics skills) and take this into account when planning the learning process and shaping the learning environment;
- knows different methods and working methods for teaching a learner in need of support and is able to select, compile or adapt suitable teaching materials;
- has a tolerant and ethical attitude in creating equal opportunities and valuing individual characteristics in the conditions of inclusive education.
