Course aims

To explain the structure, application and development trends of the educational system in a global and social and political context; interaction and influences between educational and other social institutions, mainly between economic and social systems; an overview of trends in educational policy.

Brief description of the course

The content and instruments of educational sociology and policy. The focus of topics is on accessibility, the meaning of education in society, the quality and accountability of education, trends in education policy. In seminars we will analyse Estonian education in comparison with international education in the context of policy decisions in education.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of terminology and research in education sociology and policy;
- has skills how to interpret international comparative data and knowledge of interpreting developments in education policy.
