Brief description of the course
The course Experiential learning in an open learning environment is conducted in cooperation with the Energy Discovery Centre and enables a learner to apply acquired knowledge in practice. The role of informal and experiential learning in acquiring knowledge is emphasized during the course. The course structure relies on the three-stages learning model (preparatory activities for learning in an open learning environment, activities in the given learning environment and reflective post-activities). The course integrates different subject fields by supporting active learning and intrisic motivation. Different active learning possibilities are used as learning methods for learning by doing and cooperative learning.
During the course students participate in introductory lectures, seminars, practice at the Discovery Centre, participate in the research theatre programme and apply the learning programmes created by them at the Discovery Centre in cooperation with fellow students.
Topics treated: different learning environments and different ways of learning. Experiential learning. Supporting learning motivation, inquiry learning. Planning a learning process in an open learning environment. Activities for teachers and students following pre-, while- and post- learning model. Compilation of work instructions and reference materials. Conducting and assessing the learning process in an open learning environment. Role of reflexion in experiential learning. Purposeful integration of different learning activities in the study programme context in an open learning environment. Rules and requirements in conducting teaching outside the classroom.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the principles of experiential learning and the ways of application in developing and activating a learning environment;
- is able to plan and conduct the learning process in an open learning environment;
- is able to compile learning instructions for supporting learning in an open learning environment in regard to the age and previous knowledge of learners;
- is able to analyse learning process conducted in an open learning environment, purposefulness and justification of exercises.
