Course aims
1) Acquire an understanding of information systems, their role in the organizational context, and the activities necessary to create them; 2) Acquire the ability to analyze, structure, and justify information system solutions before implementing them.
Brief description of the course
The course provides an introduction to information systems, focusing on systems thinking as the basis for information systems design. The course is project-based: students apply the methods they have learned in an independent team project, during which an information system solution is designed, which is the basis for a further software development project.
Topics covered:
- organizational context of information systems;
- information systems development methods and roles involved in them;
- modeling of parties, business processes and data;
- requirements gathering and documentation, scope management;
- principles of information systems architecture and creating a structure;
- analysis of integrations between information systems;
- preparation of a project plan.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- describes the role of information systems in the context of the organization;
- identifies, analyzes, and describes business needs;
- applies common information systems architecture patterns;
- uses standard models to model parties, processes, data, and information system architecture;
- prepares associated information system documentation;
- prepares a project plan for creating an information system according to an appropriate development method and scope.
