Course aims
*Provide opportunities to develop knowledge upon the main issues of current Humanities.
*Support the development of the ability to understand independently the historical background of current and topical cultural and philosophical issues and their relations both in the past and present.
*Provide opportunities for developing the skills necessary for setting goals for the learning process and for self- expression and self-management, which are necessary for enhanced acquiring of practical and theoretical knowledge at the university.
*Create pre-requisites for developing the analytical capacity necessary for solving problems related to Humanities
Brief description of the course
The course consists of lectures delivered by teaching staff of different fields and addresses in longer time and wider spatial frame various key issues of Humanities, for example what is Freedom, what is Language, what is Happiness, what is Beauty, what is Power, what is Truth etc.
The topics covered will vary partially from year to year depending on the current and important issues of the society and the changes of our cultural environment.
Parallel to the lectures introducing subject specific topics there will be lecture-seminars introducing the following transferable skills: study skills (learning styles and strategies, planning of the learning process, time management, self- management, preparation for exams and assessments), information retrieval and the sources and digital competencies (the main field specific online environments, social media, study environments), group work, written and oral self-expression (academic texts, compiling oral presentations and presentation skills).
As individual work the students will read subject specific literature, will compile a reading diary and lecture diary, they will compile as a group work a written research or project work on a topic offered by the lecturer and they will present the results of the group work as an oral presentation during the final seminar (the presentation day). In addition the students will analyse the contribution to project work of their peers within the group while solving the assigned problem.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- recognizes the most significant questions of the Humanities, can discuss them and is able to understand the historical nature of the current cultural problems and their relationships to each other;
- is able to recognize different learning methods and is able to, using them, to acquire most efficiently the knowledge; has acquired theoretical and practical knowledge about university education and of the study at a university;
- is familiar with the principles of the academic culture, is able to navigate the study environments used for teaching and is able to use the most common programmes supporting the teaching and learning process;
- is able to express oneself clearly and in accordance of the topic and the situation.
