Course aims
Learning to acknowledge the problems associated with social and human sciences methodology, acquisition of an overview of the possibilities of qualitative research methods, and forming of the capability to choose suitable methods for individual research depending on field and research task.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of lectures/theoretical seminars where the methods are introduced and subjects discussed, and practical seminars where the PhD students’ assignments are reviewed and discussed. The course topics include introducing materials gathering methods and focusing on analysis methods: ethnography, visual methods, discourse analyses; narrative analyses; grounded theory
The PhD students read the materials submitted by teachers, participate in lectures/theoretical seminars, do their assignments, make review for other student’ assignment as well as participate in discussion thereof in seminars. Participation in all assignment seminars is obligatory.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the main methods for qualitative data gathering and analysis;
- is capable of treating their areas of research from different perspectives and selecting the methods suitable for the research.
