Course aims
To create an opportunity for the development of skills in goal setting and self-management of the learning process, and to support the development of readiness for successful learning in higher education.
The student has acquired knowledge of goal setting, the implementation of various learning strategies, self-management and time management skills, knows the research fields of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Health, and connects them with their specialty in these areas. The student has developed his/her digital skills and has acquired the principles of writing and presenting academic texts.
Brief description of the course
The topics tackled during the course are as follows:
1) Introduction to the focus field, academic study fields of the School of Natural Sciences and Health, study regulations and field-based guidelines, and strategic documents. Educational work: study plans, project work, independent work, analysis of the progress of studies, feedback, help and support activities, treatment of different situations.
2) Learning skills: the relation of learning to the mental process, attitudes and beliefs that promote learning, learning skills based on the principles of self-directed learning, including planning the studies and using different strategies and further analysis of the learning process, career planning, time management, connecting personal life with learning, studying in a group, preparing for exams and assessment. Entrepreneurship, proactivity and planning, innovation, management of stress and changes. Creativity and creativity techniques. Principles of feedback, receiving, and giving feedback.
3) Academic Library. Information search, its sources and technology: recognition and determination of the need for information, process, strategies, and techniques of information search. Databases, forming an information request, search techniques, determination, finding suitable information sources, and the choice of information sources. Digital competences: popular electronic environments used in studies and field-specific activities, ICT devices, and popular programmes to support the specialty (text processing, table processing, presentations, cloud applications, social media, learning environments) and presentation techniques.
4) Written and oral expression: academic writing, types of academic texts, principles of analysis, critical reading and writing of scientific texts, taking notes, public performance and making presentations, compiling writ
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of the study regulations of Tallinn University, is familiar with the main research fields of School of Natural Sciences and Health, knows the connections with his/her specialty and other specialties, knows and uses the data sources and guidelines of the institute;
- can analyze the role of more effective and less effective learning skills in relation to their own learning experience, and is aware of motivational factors that may influence their learning process;
-knows different self-regulation strategies and relates them to coping in different life situations;
-understands the possibilities of studying in a group and is aware of possible changes in the organization of one's daily life in connection with entering university;
- knows the definitions of creativity and the creative process, can analyze the manifestation of one's own creativity;
has become familiar with the Tallinn University academic library and Tallinn University information systems, the possibility of using research sources and databases, is familiar with the learning environments used in teaching, and can use the most common programs that support teaching activities;
- knows the requirements of academic writing and can create a correctly formatted academic text using appropriate sources of information, can primarily use critical thinking, reading, and writing methods and strategies, analyze the substantive aspects of arguments, and present their positions both orally and in writing;
--when completing independent work, follows the university's requirements for formatting written work.
