Brief description of the course
An overview of the history of Latin: the most important periods, the most significant authors and works. Latin alphabet. Principles of the classical and traditional pronunciation. Quantity and stress. Latin verbs: the active voice in indicative. Declinable words in Latin: nouns, adjectives, pronouns. Agreement of the parts of the sentence. Translation and interpretation of sentence in active voice. Counties and cities of the ancient Italy. Rome – center of the empire. Roman gods and mythological heroes. Roman names. Verb: the passive voice in indicative. The subjunctive in the active and passive voice. The numerals. Roman calendar. Sentence constructions. Roman emperors. Latin metrics. Translation and analyse of reading materials: anthem of students Gaudeamus; excerpts from Latin prose and poetry: Caesar, Cicero, Tacitus, Plinius, Suetonius, Horatius, Ovidius, Catullus, Vergilius, Carmin.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has profound knowledge on Latin grammar and vocabulary;
- has ability to compare the differences between Latin and Estonian/English/German/Russian;
- knows importance of Latin to the development of foreign words and terminology in germanic and romance languages;
- has knowledge on the society and culture of ancient Rome;
- has ability to read and analyse the original texts by Latin authors.
