Course aims
An introductory overview of traditional and contemporary fields of the levels of language, points of contact with other disciplines and possibilities for the application of the results of linguistic research.
Brief description of the course
Language and its levels and applications. Language as a sign system, symbol, index, icon, diagram. Iconic communication. Sign language. Sentence semantics. Pragmatics. Sociolinguistics. Language change and grammaticalization. Language change and typology. Model of a tree diagram and language families of the world. Model of a tree diagram and contact theory. Linguistic mind. Hypothesis of linguistic relativity. Psycholinguistics: dyslexia, aphasia.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to explain main levels of linguistics and to analyse them; to describe language structre; to characterize important subdisciplines within linguistics and to name their most significant representatives; to describe language as a mean of communication.
