Course aims
To introduce students to basic research methodology for empirical data collection. The students learn to relate linguistic research methods to their potential applications, and to plan and carry out research, practise teamwork and peer review.
Brief description of the course
This course is an introduction to research methods and fundamental issues in linguistic research methodology. Through hands-on assignments different data collection and elicitation means will be dealt with. During the course the students will work in pairs (or groups), choose a topic, carry out 4 projects, each using a different data collection method (e.g. analysis of printed materials, use of questionnaires, interviews, and corpora). Each report (5 pp) should be submitted and presented in class (10 min presentation + 5 min discussion); a final report will be based on 4 shorter reports.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
On a successful completion of the course, the student will know various research methods used in linguistics, including data collection and analysis; will have relevant knowledge and skills for presenting their work and participating in teamwork.
