Introduce theoretical and practical concepts of sport and exercise psychology, which are important for (a) getting performance advantage in competitive sports and (b) maintaining healthy attitudes towards lifelong physical activity.
Brief description of the course
The course gives an overview of sport and exercise psychology as a discipline and its main theoretical concepts. More in-depth knowledge will be acquired in regards to the main practical implications, both within competitive sports and field of exercising. Within the course students will have an opportunity to try out the main mental training techniques. Finally, the course will give an overview of social psychology in sports, looking more specifically into group processes and coaches’ leadership styles.
Written essay; individual work with lecture materials and course literature to prepare for examination.
Learning outcomes in the course
1. Student has an overview of the main topics that sport and exercise psychology deals with. Understands the mental side of performance, knows the main theoretical considerations and practical applications of the field.
2. Student is capable to analyze personal performance (be it in sports, academic or work field), and can implement acquired knowledge for benefits of personal performance.
Course grade is based on exam (75% of the grade) and essay (25% of the grade).
Exam is assessed based on the 1st learning outcome as follows:
Exam includes open-ended questions, which will be assessed based on their relevance to question, clarity, and displayed level of acquired course materials.
Essay is assessed based on the 2nd learning outcome as follows:
Essay is assessed based on its fulfillment of essay requirements and displayed level of understanding of the topic under consideration.
E – course learning outcomes are fulfilled at the minimal acceptable level; exam and essay aggregate result is 51-60% of the maximal
D - course learning outcomes are fulfilled at the acceptable level exam and essay aggregate result is 61-70% of the maximal
C - course learning outcomes are fulfilled at a good level; exam and essay aggregate result is 71-80% of the maximal
B - course learning outcomes are fulfilled at a very good level; exam and essay aggregate result is 81-90% of the maximal
A - course learning outcomes are fulfilled at exceptionally good level; exam and essay aggregate result is 91-100% of the maximal
