Course aims
The course is a major subject that focuses on theoretical discussion and practical integrated approach to the four main parts of academic writing: the writing process, elements of writing, academic vocabulary for writing and academic writing models.
Brief description of the course
The course focuses on the academic writing process (common types of academic writing and their characteristic features, finding and critical appraisal of sources, text structure, paragraph structure, text cohesion and coherence, etc) and elements of academic writing (argument and discussion, cause and effect, comparisons, definitions, generalisations, use of visual information). Attention is paid to academic vocabulary and its development. The main text type under observation are introductions, paragraphs, conclusions academic essay.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- have familiarized themselves with the main terminology and concepts of the field as well as the characteristic features of different text types;
- are able to apply the newly acquired knowledge and skills, completing the given assignments achieving a positive grade;
- as a result of the course activities, the student has to demonstrate noticeable improvement in academic writing an lexis, linguistic accuracy and fluency.
