Course aims
To support acquiring knowledge about chemistry didactics in the study process of future primary school teachers of natural sciences (chemistry);
To support acquiring knowledge about basic methodology of demonstrative experiments, to make use of possibility to do practical work, to experience and to get used to the methodology;
To create possibility to acquire knowledge in the field of didactics, and to use this knowledge, to acquire a skill to resolve problems that may rise in the process of teaching;
To support acquiring the skill to use relevant literature (pedagogical, didactical) and to draw up a syllabus and degree programme;
To support developing the skill to plan, conduct and analyse an eksperiment;
To acquaint students with different aspects on didactics, thus creating a positive attitude towards teaching as a creative activity, making them understand the value of active learning and pupil centered learning.
Brief description of the course
A historical review of development of chemistry as science and subject. The goals of teaching chemistry and its connection to the development of society, its appearance in national curriculums. The components and structure of teaching process. Chemistry as subject his place and its connection to other natural sciences at school. The main principles of environmental studies in the context of chemistry. Organising forms of the studies. The stucture and goals of chemistry protection lesson. Study methods and methodic means, student behaviour forms in lesson. Using visual aids and infotechnology in chemistry lesson.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has general knowledge of the historic development of chemistry as a subject;
- knows the objectives of chemistry teaching, as set out in national degree programme, can compare them historically;
- knows the components and structure of chemistry teaching process;
- can interconnect chemistry and other natural sciences;
- can analyze environmental issues in context of chemistry;
- knows the structure of a chemistry lesson and can adapt it, if necessary;
- knows study methods and methodology and can apply them as necessary;
- knows basic didactic viewpoints on illustration and takes them into consideration in his/her work;
- can make calculations that the syllabus contains;
- knows how to use additional material to illustrate different fields of study;
- knows methodological questions of control and assessment.
