Course aims
Have an overview of the diversity of wildlife. Support learning about Estonian biota through practical
works, independent work and study tours.
Brief description of the course
An overview of the diversity and taxonomy of wildlife. Vertebrates (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds
and mammals) and invertebrates (insects, arachnids and other well-known groups), comparing them.
Flowering plants, conifers, ferns, bryophytes, lichens and fungi - their structure, reproduction and
functioning.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of the diversity and system of wildlife;
- is able to characterise wildlife - bacteria, protists, fungi, plants and animals - and gives examples of species;
- distinguishes vertebrates (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) and invertebrates (insects,
arachnids and other well-known groups), knows how to compare them;
- distinguishes vertebrates (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) and invertebrates (insects, arachnids and other well-known groups), knows how to compare them;
- distinguishes flowering plants, coniferous trees, ferns, bryophytes and lichens. Compares their structure, reproduction and functioning;
- has an overview of the diversity of fungi;
- knows the most common Estonian plants and animals;
- is able to identify species using keys and microscope;
- orients in information sources about the diversity of Estonian wildlife.
