Course aims
A subject in the optional syllabus of the MA curriculum of Primary School Teacher, which aims to have a systematic overview of the basic concepts of ecology, to be able to make sustainable choices at home, and in the local community, and to teach the topics of sustainable development.
Brief description of the course
Basic terms used in ecology. Abiotic and biotic environment. Ecological amplitude. Structure of population. Mutual interactions among organisms. Life communities and food web. Ecosystems: energy flow and cycles of matter. Nature protection. Red lists. Environment and development: the global view, a global crises and solutions. Approaches to teaching about the sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to explain the interactions between biota and abiotic environment, to show the relevance of ecology to modern societies, and to apply different active learning methods in ESD teaching.
