Course aims
To create prerequisites for understanding the teaching aims, study principles and study content, and choosing and applying purposeful teaching methods in teaching nature studies at the 1st and 2nd school levels.
Brief description of the course
From nature studies to science: about the history of teaching nature-related knowledge.
The aims and study content of nature studies.
Teaching Methods:
1. to support attention and perception (leading an observation, applying other senses) 2. to support memory and thinking (asking questions, leading a discussion, solving problems incl. experiments and other research-related activities). The formation of science terms.
Understanding and writing an informative text.
Social and physical aspects of the environment of nature studies (work in large and small groups; outdoor lessons and field trips).
Study materials of nature studies (study literature, work materials, instructional aids) and principles of their creation.
Assessment and feedback in nature studies (incl. creating work instructions and assessing work).
Vertical and horizontal integration in nature studies. The differentiation and individualisation of the study process in nature studies.
Planning a lesson and (self-)analysis.
Instructing studies at home.
Supporting nature-related study activities outside of class.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the role of nature-related knowledge and the skills and values related to them in the development of students at the 1st and 2nd school levels;
- knows the aims, study content and study aids for obtaining nature-related knowledge, knows the principles of teaching the subject and can choose and apply successful methods in teaching the subject;
- is able to shape and apply an appropriate environment for nature studies;
- is able to give students, parents and colleagues feedback that relies on the assessment of nature studies results.
