Course aims
- Give an overview of theories, design and implementation of learning games;
- Provide knowledge and skills of implementation possibilities of learning games in educational contexts;
- Support acquiring necessary knowledge and skills for designing, developing, implementing and evaluting learning games in educational contexts;
- Support acquiring necessary skills and knowledge for integrating learning design models, learning theories and learning game design
Brief description of the course
The course is divided into two part, which run in parallel:
1. Theoretical underspinnings of planning and developing learning games and their integration with learning design and learning theories:
- Nature of learning games
- Taxonomy of learning games
- Examples of learning games and their use in education
- Concept of learning games
- Roles and processes of developing learning games
- Development of learning games
2. Planning and developing a learning games in groups:
- Generation of learning game idea and its integration with learning objectives and theories
- Gameplay
- Core mechanics
- Interactive storytelling
- Game world
- Character design
- Specification
- Prototyping
Acquiring independently theoretical material material (12h).
During the contact hours the participants are going to share and discuss the progress of their game design in groups; the participants are going to acquire some additional theoretical aspects. During the last contact day the groups are going to present their learning game design, its specification and relation to learning design and learning theories. The workload for the group work is 44 h.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has basic knowledge and skills related to learning game design, development, implementation and evaluation;
- understands benefits and drawbacks of game-based learning;
- demonstrates competencies to integrate different learning design models and theories with learning game design.
Additional information
For the english group:
Study will take place in the format of home assignment and school workshops. Participation in classes and timely submission of home assignments are requirements for assessment. It’s compulsory to attend more than 70% of classes (3 labs out of 5) and collect more than 70% of points (12 out of 18) for assignments.
