Course aims
To create opportunities to study some central themes, forms and plots in world literature; to enable to acquire knowledge about different literary cultures and the contacts between them.
Brief description of the course
The subject explores world literature through studying 7-10 significant literary works in depth. The exact content of the subject varies, e.g. it can concentrate on the formation and variations of an influential genre, or in the pursuit of some repetitive plot devices themes or motifs in world literature. The subject involves Western literature (including Estonian literature), Middle Eastern, Asian literature and Postcolonial literatures. The subject combines lectures and seminars thematically linked to them. At the lectures the tutors discuss the topic chosen for the course, based on the appointed literary works. At the seminars the works discussed at the lectures are analysed in greater detail. Every student chooses two seminars to participate in.
