Course aims
To create prerequisites for acquiring basic theoretical concepts of leisure and recreation.

Brief description of the course
Study of the philosophical, social, and cultural foundations of leisure and recreation. Introduction to the main concepts and theories of leisure. Philosophical, social and cultural foundations of leisure. Introduction to the basic concepts and theories. Conceptualization of leisure: leisure as time, activity, state of being. Relation of leisure time to work; a change in relationships in history. Components of the life-space. Factors affecting leisure choices. The concept of recreation and main theories. Recreation as an experience. Recreation as an institution. Operational philosophies of recreation.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- identify main theoretical approaches to explore and understand leisure and recreation;
- define the main content of leisure and recreation in one’s own life and according to the recreation and leisure profession in modern western society and as described in the literature throughout history;
- develop the ability to communicate in oral and written formats, individually and in groups.
