Course aims
Support the ability to understand…
• basic sociological concepts, theoretical approaches and fields of sociology;
• the multifacetedness of sociology as a discipline of social research;
• interconnections between social processes, institutions and people's experiences, attitudes, perceptions and life histories.
Brief description of the course
The course aims to help develop a broad understanding of sociology both in terms of history and contemporary outlook. It gives an overview of important theoretical perspectives, fields and topics and aims to develop the ability to put forward sociological arguments in written texts and in discussions during lectures and seminars.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the different fields, theories and key concepts of sociology;
- distinguishes the discussed concepts and theories from each other and from information not related to them, relates them to the phenomena and processes of social life;
- critically analyzes the relationships between various social processes, institutions and people's perceptions, attitudes, life histories and experiences using sociological perspectives.
