Course aims
The aim of the course is to introduce sociological approaches and paradigmatic changes in urban studies, providing skills to apply sociological analysis to urban phenomena. Participants will have the opportunity to practice selected sociological research methods to comprehend urban processes and gain experience in planning, conducting, and presenting urban research.
Brief description of the course
Urban utopias and sociological imaginations of the city. Urbanization and urbanism. From urban sociology to interdisciplinary urban studies. Urban and housing processes: socio-spatial segregation; polarization: ghettoization and gentrification; suburbanization and urban sprawl. Shrinking cities. Production of spatial relations: culture and economy; meanings and identities. Urban policy: power, interest groups, and negotiations. Urban communities.
Sustainability in the context of urban development. Social justice; making the city and urban space from a sociological perspective.
The course takes the form of lectures and seminars. For seminars, academic articles will be studied, and written summaries will be prepared based on specific questions. In research tasks conducted in the urban environment, students will apply selected research methods (such as observation, document analysis, research diary, emotional mapping, etc.). Research tasks will be presented and discussed in the seminar.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- orientates oneself in contemporary sociological perspectives on the city;
- is able to sociologically analyze processes occurring in urban environments;
- gains experience in planning, conducting, and presenting individual and group-based urban research.
