Course aims

Historical overview of the development of the English language. Changes in phonology, lexis and grammar in the course of the development.

Brief description of the course

Indo-European languages and germanic languages; historical changes, English as a world language, contemporary English. Reading and analysing original texts from the different periods of the history of English.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has got an overview of the history of English and its development;
- is able to analyse peculiarities in grammar, phonology and lexis.
