Brief description of the course

The course introduces key concepts for the study of English-speaking cultures, including culture, identity, language, place, diaspora. It focuses on select case-studies from diverse Anglophone countries (e.g., empire and post-empire, migration, indigenous communities, colonisation and settlement, ecological issues, cultural practices). The course provides experience in working with a variety of textual and audiovisual material; introduces English-language media and questions of representation and bias; covers basics of academic reading, writing, and research; and provides opportunities for further and deeper study of culture and related issues, with a particular emphasis on the English-speaking countries around the world.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands key concepts used in the study of English-speaking cultures and applies them in the analysis of case studies;
- describes and contextualises selected phenomena and events in English-speaking societies, relating them to broader cultural and social processes;
- analyses cultural and media texts critically, distinguishing between representation, interpretation, and factual information, and recognising issues of bias and perspective;
- applies basic academic skills, including formulating basic research questions, locating and evaluating sources, and constructing a structured argument;
- communicates ideas in English in both oral and written form, using appropriate terminology to discuss cultural and social topics;
- works collaboratively in a responsible and sustainable manner and reflects on their own learning process and development.
