Course aims
Explain the relational social background of normality-abnormality scale. Analyse contemporary “new” understandings. Support the development of competences for the peaceful regulation of deviant behaviour. Broaden one’s view in the area of special pedagogy in order to help subject and class teachers of general education schools. Create preconditions for the increase of tolerance. Foster helpful approach towards people with special needs.
Brief description of the course
Analysis of social background of school problems. Overview of the nature and problems of the child with special needs and means of intervention in ordinary school. Defining special need. Problematic functions of school as an institution. Hyper- and hypoactive child in an ordinary school; MBD and ADHD. Means of therapy in work with problematic children. Talented child as a pupil with special needs. Sick child in the class-room – challenge for the teacher. The course consists of lectures and seminars. The student who has been absent from more than one seminar, writes an additional paper on a given topic (3000 words of which 2/3 should be own thoughts).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- recognises types of special needs and can define them;
- identifies cause-and effect relationships of deviant behaviour;
- presents in the paper and when speaking in the seminar relevant thoughts about the topic;
- debates about these issues in a wider socio-political context;
- combines and integrates the knowledge of this course with knowledge from other courses (e.g. research methods in social pedagogy).
