Course aims
Direct student towards thinking about child’s rights since being a new-born, the rights of sick child in hospital conditions, role of family and medical staff in guaranteeing the child’s rights.
Brief description of the course
Medical help of premature babies and new-borns in Estonia. Humanistic neonatal medicine. Mother and child contact. Medical-psychological work with mothers and families in the neonatal unit. Right to live, right to die (problems of medical ethics). Abandoned children. Problems of family birth. Father’s role in family birth. Child with (multiple) disabilities in hospital and at home. Medical and social aspects of deeply premature babies from social worker’s point of view.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of child’s rights from the period of a new-born;
- understands the role of family and medical staff in guaranteeing child’s rights.
