Course aims

To consider commentary as significant phenomenon of literature and culture giving a presentation of the main methods of the different types of texts commentary.
To prepare students for commenting texts.

Brief description of the course

Commentary as genre of research and its tradition hermeneutics method. Cultural differences of the Commentary. The role of commentary in the philosophy works, history researches, in literature and culture. Commentary as the phenomenon of the entire culture in general is located between the original text (or its translation) and purely creative work of commentator.
The types of commentary.
Commentary practices individually and in the groups, which will be discussed at the seminars.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- understands history and traditions of the commentary as scholar genre;
- knows how to perceive commented text as a system;
- has skills to draw conclusions about parts of the text, that need comments;
- has a practical text commenting knowledge.
