Course aims
To support the ability to understand:
- important theories, terms, concepts of environmental sociology and environmental communication;
- mutual relations between society and the natural environment;
- possibilities and limitations of influencing environmental problems (including policies, social movements, communication);
- factors affecting environmental awareness and environmentally conscious behavior and ways of shaping them.
To develop readiness to analyze environmental communication cases and implement effective practices.
Brief description of the course
An interdisciplinary course with an applied output that combines natural scientific and sociological knowledge and way of thinking. Emphasis is placed on the role of environmental communication in various social processes. The course consists of lectures, seminars and independent work. Students must also read seminar texts, participate in seminars where discussions and practical tasks take place, and prepare a case analysis and intervention plan as a group work.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can explain the dynamics of relations between social processes, institutions and the natural and material environment;
- can name and distinguish some environmental sociological and communication theoretical approaches, research fields and related basic concepts;
- orients in factors affecting environmental awareness and environmentally conscious behavior and in ways of shaping them;
- can critically analyze environmental sociological problems, including applying theories to understand case studies;
- analyzes cases of environmental communication, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and recommends ways of improvement, based on which creates a simpler intervention plan.
