Course aims

The goal of the subject is:

To offer to the students a short overview of the main terms and notions of algebra and geometry used in the university mathematics together with their most important applications. To teach students to use the most common methods of algebra and geometry.

Brief description of the course

Determinants, matrices and systems of linear equations. Vectors. Linear operations with vectors. Scalar product, cross product, triple product. Main problems of geometry on the plane. Equations of lines and circles on the plane. Polar coordinates. Main problems of the geometry in the space. Lines and planes in the space, their equations. Reciprocal positions of lines and planes. Curves of the second degree: ellips, hyperbola, parabola. Applications for all topics.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:

- knows main notions of algebra and geometry;

- is familiar with the main properties, relations and theorems of this course and their proof methods;

- is able to solve the standard exercises of algebra and geometry.
