Course aims
To give an overview of hydrometeorological conditions and water regime in Estonia and their time and spatial variability.
Brief description of the course
The term hydrometeorological regime. Global and regional factors affecting Estonian climate and water regime. General and applied regionalizations of climate. Radiation and heat balance of Estonia, the water cycle of Estonia. Temperature regime of soil and water bodies. Precipitation types and their time-spatial distribution in Estonia. Winds and sea breeze circulation in Estonia. Agroclimatic characteristics of Estonia. Watersheds in Estonia. Rivers, lakes and bogs. Main characteristics of hydrological regime of Estonian inland waters. Hazardous hydrometeorological phenomena in Estonia.
Individual assignment comprises of writing a summary on the subject related to Estonian climate or waterbodies and reading the course literatuure.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge about the thermal and water regime and climate conditions in Estonia;
- has knowledge of the basic parameters of climate and water regime of Estonia, the organization of hydrometeorological observations and the development of water regime in relation to human and natural factors.
