Course aims
To develop an understanding of the hydrosphere, including the hydrological processes and relationships with the surrounding environment.
To develop a systematic understanding of hydrology and its various fields, parts of hydrological design and resolution methods.
To develop an understanding of the complexity ofthe water-related environment.
Brief description of the course
First part of the course provides an overview of biological, chemical, physical and socioeconomical purposes and functions of water. Provided introduction covers the concepts of hydrosphere and hydrology through its different fields, concepts of water resources, their distribution and problems, and hydrological cycle, water balance and its basic elements. An overview of the hydrology of fluvial and standing water bodies (including the seas and oceans) and glaciers. The first part of the course ends with a selection of seminar topics and presentation of examination procedures.
The second half of the course traverses the hydrology of wetlands, basics of hydrological measurements and analysis methods, principles of modern water management. The course ends with a seminar and exam.
