Course aims
To support the development of deepened understanding of the phenomena and principles of equilibrium thermodynamics and molecular physics;
To support the deduction of some principles of heat and molecular structure by using the skill of applying the laws of mechanics;
To enable the acquisition of the fundamentals and understanding of the structure of matter.
Brief description of the course
Ideal gases. The first law of thermodynamics. The second law of thermodynamics. The basics of the molecular-kinetic theory of matter. The elements of statistical physics: the statistical nature of temperature and pressure, Maxwell and Boltzmann distributions. Real gases and vapours. Liquids. Crystalline and amorphous solids. Polymers. Exercises and problem tasks on the topic.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the main laws of equilibrium thermodynamics and molecular physics, and the limits to their applicability;
- understands the main concepts and laws of heat and molecular structure;
- has skill to apply the laws of thermodynamics while solving the problem exercises;
- has skill to apply the theory of thermodynamics and that of heat and molecular structure while describing and analysing everyday phenomena.
