Course aims
A compulsory subject in the BA curriculum of Biology, which aims to explain the complicated relationships that exist among organisms and between organisms and environment.
Brief description of the course
Historical background of ecology; basic terms and notations used in ecology. Abiotic and biotic environment. Ecological amplitude and niche. Structure of populations. Migration and dispersal in time and space. Mutual interactions among organisms. Communities and succession. Ecosystems: energy flow and cycling of matter.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to explain the interaction between biota and abiotic environment;
- can analyze the formation of ecological hierarchies;
- can show the relevance of ecology to modern societies.
