Course aims
To give an overview of the development of folk art in the context of history of culture and respective terminology. To develop the skills of independent study and presentation of the areas of material culture and give students an opportunity to produce objects in practice.
Brief description of the course
Specific features of the development of Estonian folk culture. Symbol structures, Estonian family symbols, runic calendars, folk ornaments and selection of colours. Animated world, chronology, cyclic character of handicraft objects. The influence of other communities on the development of our folk culture. The development of professional handicraft, organised activity (associations). Folk art from antiquity to the present day: architecture, interior design, social life, consumer items, jewellery, clothes.
Independent work: writing summaries of field trips and essays, preparing PowerPoint presentations based on sources dealing with the subject of folk art, compiling a study folder of folk art and making a project-based tactile book based on folk culture.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has systematic knowledge about the development of Estonian folk culture and an experience of project work;
- is able to characterise folk art;
- can compose essays, presentations, study portfolios; present the outcome of their practical work;
- knows the sources of collecting basic material and terminology of the subject.
