Course aims
To form prerequisites for understanding and applying contemporary principles of teaching the mother tongue.
To create a basis for designing the teaching of the mother tongue by following contemporary principles.
To guide students to give meaning to what, why, when and how to teach.
To create a basis for the students' own activeness in drawing connections between theory and practice and making choices/conclusions.
Brief description of the course
The nature and structure of language, classifying a language. Developing language readiness. Subject of didactics of the mother tongue, different bases, main principles and directions of teaching the mother tongue. Sub-skills of language communication, their integration. Teaching the mother tongue by focusing on action (based on language use): theoretical bases and principles.
(Different) definitions of listening, importance of listening. Organising listening in a practical teaching situation. A student with listening problems in class. Main components and factors that should be known when creating a speaking programme. Functions of oral language use, their teaching principles.
Relating the teaching of listening and speaking to literature (fiction) and other subjects.
As a recurring topic: the logical use of different digital aids and smart gadgets in teaching listening and speaking.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the different approaches and contemporary principles of teaching the mother tongue;
- perceives the important role of the mother tongue and the importance of use-based teaching;
- is able to create and organise simulations of language activities of everyday communication depending on the text, topic and situation of language use by using (daily, if possible) different digital aids and smart gadgets.
