Course aims
To support the formation of a theoretical background regarding reading and writing and the general principles of teaching the mother tongue.
To create a basis for the acquisition of practical instructions and concrete methods for developing students' writing and reading skills.
To guarantee the students' own activeness and creativeness in making connections between theory and practice and making choices/drawing conclusions in the process of planning and organising the teaching of the mother tongue.
To create prerequisites for forming the knowledge for working with children with reading and writing difficulties and speech problems in the mother tongue class.
To form a readiness to adapt studies according to the learner's needs.
Brief description of the course
The definitions and concept of writing. Aims of writing and types of texts. Methods of teaching writing, different approaches to writing. A teaching method based on the writing process. Teaching writing technique. Teaching grammar and spelling overtly and covertly. Written communicative activities/tasks in class (depending on situation of language use, the topic and/or the text being read) at the 1st and 2nd level of basic school.
Definitions of reading, the concept of reading, the nature and aims of reading. The principles of teaching to read. The main strategies of teaching to read, work with a text. Methods of teaching to read and write: more precisely about the phonetic method. A class with a literary direction in the 5th and 6th grades.
Using newspapers and other mass communication means and smart gadgets in teaching the mother tongue.
Speech impairments. A student with a speech impairment in the mother tongue class.
Reading and writing difficulties: reasons, manifestation, noticing. Taking into account reading and writing difficulties in the classroom. Adapting study materials according to the nature of the student. Simplifying a text. Assessing the level of difficulty of a text.
As a recurring topic: the logical, everyday use of different digital aids and smart gadgets in teaching reading and writing.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a personal conviction regarding an effective approach to writing and teaching the mother tongue in general;
- is able to create writing tasks with a scenario depending on text, social situation or topic;
- uses creativity, their digital competence and the opportunities offered by information technology to develop students' mother tongue skills;
- is able to tie together the sub-skills of linguistic communication, grammar and literary topics into a mother tongue class according to the principles of language as a whole and the integration of subjects;
- notices reading and writing difficulties and speech problems;
- is able to choose appropriate methods for working with students with reading and writing difficulties.
