Course aims
To develop thinking and to acquire maths-related knowledge. To become familiar with a branch of mathematics and to perceive the differences in the structure of one field depending on the tools used. To find links between them and see that school mathematics is built on the same basis, but using other tools of mathematics.
Brief description of the course
Set theory: the concept of a set. Operations with sets. The concept of a binary relationship. The ordering link. Mapping.
Logic: the logic sentence. Logical operations. The laws of logic.
Number theory: the axioms of the natural number concept. Ordering. Positional and non-positional number systems. Divisibility of natural numbers. Enlargement of the set of natural numbers. Set of whole numbers. Set of rational numbers. Irrational numbers. Set of real numbers.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the concept of a set and is able to perform operations with sets;
- has the ability to create links between different sets of cross multiplication;
- can use a Venn diagram;
- can use mathematical methods in solving problems of logic on the basis of propositional calculus;
- knows the sets of numbers and the links between them, and the number of operations in each set;
- knows positional and non-positional number systems;
- knows the features of the divisibility of natural numbers and can implement them.
